Best Burger in West Oakland: Why Hyphy Burger Owns the 880

Best Burger in West Oakland: Why Hyphy Burger Owns the 880

West Oakland don't play when it comes to food, and we didn't come to just participate — we came to run it. Hyphy Burger started on West Grand Ave with one goal: smash a halal beef patty so hard the edges turn to lace, stack it hyphy-style, and make the whole 880 corridor talk about it. Here's the full case for why that's exactly what happened, from the smash technique to the write-ups to the block itself.

It starts with the smash

A smashburger lives or dies on the edges. We press fresh halal ground beef onto a screaming-hot flat top so the crust caramelizes into crispy, lacy edges while the center stays juicy. That's the difference between a fast-food patty and the Hyphy Burger — and it's why it became our best seller the day we opened. If you want the technical breakdown of what separates a real smash from a griddled patty, read our halal smashburger deep dive.

Named for the culture, built for the block

The 880 Jam Meal is our tribute to the Bay — named after Keak Da Sneak, loaded with beef bacon jam or pastrami jam, grilled jalapeños, onion rings and two smashed patties under yellow and white American cheese. It's not a gimmick burger. It's the tray regulars order back to back on West Grand. Read the full story behind the name in The Story Behind the 880 Jam Burger.

Halal beef, no shortcuts

Every patty is halal ground beef, smashed to order — not pre-formed, not frozen into a puck days ahead. That matters in a neighborhood where halal options at a proper smashburger spot are still rare. We built the menu so nobody in West Oakland has to choose between halal and a real smashburger.

The sauce that made "You Feel Me" a menu item

Our house sauce isn't a throwaway condiment — it's on nearly every burger and sold on its own as a 2oz cup for fries and onion rings. Creamy, tangy, a little bit of heat. It's the one thing regulars ask us not to skimp on.

Two Oakland kitchens, one standard

The West Grand location serves West Oakland, Downtown and Uptown. Our International Boulevard shop covers East Oakland near 98th Ave. Same smash, same sauce, same halal beef at both. Check the live menu on either store's Toast page before you roll up, since hours and item availability can shift.

Don't just take our word for it

We've been written up by Eater SF, The Infatuation SF, The Oaklandside and more since we opened — see the full list of coverage at the bottom of this post.
